Congressional Republicans Are Looking to Scrap DC Law that Grants Illegal Aliens Voting Rights

House and Senate Republicans are working to overturn a new law that grants municipal voting rights to illegal aliens.  According to John Binder of Breitbart News, Democrats on the Washington, DC, City Council approved this law.

In October 2022, the DC City Council voted by a decisive 12-1 margin to advance a bill that will grant foreign nationals, irrespective of their legal status in the United States, the ability to vote in local elections such as school board and mayoral elections.

Roughly 50,000 foreign nationals and illegal aliens could be able to cast ballots in local elections across D.C. if Congress doesn’t overturn the measure before it goes into effect.

Kentucky Congressman James Comer, the House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman, recently introduced a joint resolution to eliminate the pro-illegal alien voting law that the DC City Council approved.

“Voting is a pillar of American democracy and a constitutional right that undeniably needs to be protected and preserved for citizens of this country,” Comer declared in a statement:

The D.C. Council’s reckless decision to allow non-U.S. citizens and illegal immigrants the right to vote in local elections is an attack on the foundation of this republic. This move by the Council is irresponsible and will only exacerbate the ongoing border crisis, subvert the voices of American citizens, and open the door for foreign adversaries to peddle influence in our nation’s capital.

It should go without saying: only Americans should have the power to influence local policy and guide their hard-earned taxpayer dollars to important initiatives. All Members of Congress, both Republicans and Democrats, should strongly oppose this radical effort by the D.C. Council and support this Joint Resolution.

If House Republicans give the green light to this resolution, it would be kicked off to the Senate. The Senate would have to pass it and then the resolution would need President Joe Biden’s signature to prevent the DC law from being fully implemented.

Binder noted that “Reps. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Michael Cloud (R-TX), Andrew Clyde (R-GA), Byron Donalds (R-FL), Pat Fallon (R-TX), Virginia Foxx (R-NC), Glenn Grothman (R-WI), Clay Higgins (R-LA), Jake LaTurner (R-KS), Nancy Mace (R-SC), Ralph Norman (R-SC), August Pfluger (R-TX), Pete Sessions (R-TX), and Claudia Tenney (R-NY) originally cosponsored the resolution.”

Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton said he is crafting a similar resolution in the Senate.

“Allowing illegal immigrants to vote is an insult to every voter in America. Every single Democrat should be on the record about whether they support this insane policy,” Cotton declared in a statement.

It’s unlikely that this DC law will be repealed given the present configuration of Congress and the presidency. However, such laws must always be opposed because they could be emulated across the US, even in red states with sizable urban centers.

Giving illegal aliens the right to vote subverts the voting process and only accelerates the dispossession of legacy Americans. This practice must be ended through strong legislation.
