United States Embassy Sends Warning to Americans About Avoiding Tijuana During Period of Heightened Cartel Violence

On July 4, 2022, the United States Embassy in Mexico City issued a travel warning about cartel clashes with government security forces. This statement also warned about the heightened risk of kidnappings and potential lethal encounters with cartels.
The notice came at a time after “a prominent cartel leader” was arrested and the reported risks “for confrontations between criminal organizations and Mexican security forces.” Tijuana and Rosarito were the two cities in Baja California that the US Embassy in Mexico warned Americans to take precautions when traveling to.
“U.S. citizens should expect to encounter increased Mexican law enforcement presence in those areas. Criminal organization assassinations and territorial disputes can result in bystanders being injured or killed,” the travel advisory detailed.
The State Department’s Travel Advisory was increased to Level 3 for Baja California. According to Tyler Durden of ZeroHedge, this Level 3 rating indicates that American “tourists are at risk of being injured, killed, or even kidnapped.”
Durden added that other parts of Baja California have not been flagged as increasingly dangerous by the State Department:
The good news for those visiting Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, and La Paz, located on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, is that there are no travel warnings, even for U.S. government employees. However, the Department of State does say, ‘exercise increased caution due to crime.’
Durden observed that other popular tourist locations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, have grown more violent as crime on beaches and resort facilities has been on the uptick.
Things in Mexico aren’t going so well. Instead of obsessing over geopolitical developments in Eurasia, the US needs to focus more on its Western Hemisphere, especially its southern border with Mexico.
There is no need to invade Mexico, obviously. However, US policymakers need to take its border security seriously to prevent Mexico’s cartel violence from spilling over while maintaining its national sovereignty.
