North Korea Recognizes Breakaway Donetsk People’s Republic

Denis Pushilin, the leader of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), announced on July 13, 2022 that North Korea recognized the independence of this breakaway republic.
“The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea recognized the Donetsk People’s Republic today,” Pushilin stated on Telegram. “The international status of the Donetsk People’s Republic and its statehood continue to get stronger. This is another diplomatic victory for us,” Pushilin continued.
The DPR leader congratulated North Korea for its “great support for the Donbass people.”
“This political decision will also provide the basis for the future development of economic relations. Bilateral partnership will make it possible for our companies to expand their trade. I look forward to active and fruitful cooperation,” Pushilin declared.
DPR Foreign Minister Natalya Nikonorova announced on July 12 that there have been discussions with North Korea on the recognition of the DPR.
The DPR, along with the Lugansk People’s Republic, were formed back in April 2014 following the Euromaidan Revolution of 2014 in Ukraine.
On February 21, 2022, Russia officially recognized the DPR and LPR. The following day Russia established diplomatic relations with both Republics.
On June 29, Syria recognized both Donbass republics.
Some geopolitical experts speculate that Ukraine was on the verge of launching an offensive to retake these two republics, which prompted Russia to launch its military operation in Ukraine.
It remains to be seen if Russia will ultimately end up incorporating the DPR and LPR into its broader federal system.
