Former Trump National Security Advisor John Bolton Openly Boasted About Orchestrating Foreign Coups

John Bolton, the former national security adviser for the administration of Donald Trump and a consummate superhawk, revealed during a CNN interview on July 12, 2022 that he previously devised coup attempts against foreign leaders.
Bolton made the remarks on CNN’s “The Lead”, following the conclusion of the seventh congressional hearing of the January 6 House Select Committee.
Katabella Roberts of Epoch Times observed that “panel lawmakers focused much of Tuesday’s hearing on evidence around testimony provided by former White House Counsel Pat Cipollone and alleged ties between former President Trump and ‘extremist’ right-wing groups.”
The committee argued that Trump deliberately made an attempt to launch an insurrection against the US government in order to remain in power following the 2020 presidential elections, which were rife with questions about voter integrity.
During his interview on CNN, Bolton told host Jake Tapper that Trump could not have carried out a “carefully planned coup d’etat aimed at the Constitution. He argued “that’s not the way Donald Trump does things.”
“It’s not an attack on our democracy,” Bolton commented. “It’s Donald Trump looking out for Donald Trump. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence.”
Tapper disagreed with Bolton’s statement and said “one doesn’t have to be brilliant to attempt a coup.”
Bolton then countered Tapper by citing his experience in organizing coups.
“As somebody who has helped plan coups d’etat—not here but, you know, [in] other places—it takes a lot of work. And that’s not what he [Trump] did,” Bolton added. “It was just stumbling around from one idea to another. Ultimately, he did unleash the rioters at the Capitol. As to that, there is no doubt. But not to overthrow the Constitution to buy more time to throw the matter back to the states to try to redo the issue.”
“And if you don’t believe that, then you’re going to overreact, and I think that’s a real risk for the committee, which has done a lot of good work mostly when the witnesses are testifying, not when the members are opining,” Bolton stated. “It is invariably the case when you go too far trying to prove your case, you undermine it.”
During his time in the Trump administration, Bolton had been a fierce hawk against countries such as Iran and Venezuela. In the latter case, Bolton vocally supported opposition leader Juan Guaido during Venezuela’s presidential crisis in 2019. At the time, Guaido called on the Venezuelan military to support his effort to topple Maduro due to the alleged illegality of Maduro’s re-election.
So far, Maduro remains in power.
“It turned out not to be successful,” Bolton said with regards to the US’s failed regime change attempt against Maduro. “Not that we had all that much to do with it but I saw what it took for an opposition to try and overturn an illegally elected president and they failed.”
“The notion that Donald Trump was half as confident as the Venezuelan opposition is laughable,” Bolton added. Tapper replied, “I feel like there’s other stuff you’re not telling me.”
“I’m sure there is,” Bolton retorted as he refused to provide further details about his regime change projects. After all, Bolton is likely dealing with sensitive information that could expose him and his colleagues for their nefarious actions abroad.
Bolton is a seasoned creature of the national security state and is unapologetic about his support for foreign policy destabilization abroad. The fact that he would openly brag about his previous coup projects in such a nonchalant manner shows how little foreign policy elites care about the impact of their actions.
Those are the many perks of being an unelected national security official who can always transition into a cushier position after their time in the Deep State.
