Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker Calls for the Banning of Assault Weapons and High-Capacity Magazines

On July 10, 2022, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker demanded that the federal government ban so-called “assault weapons” and high-capacity magazines. Pritzker’s demands came in the aftermath of the Highland Park mass shooting where a deranged gunman slaughtered 7 people and wounded dozens more during a Fourth of July parade.
Illinois Congressman Bob Morgan declared that “everything is on the table.” Morgan was marching in the Highland Park parade with his family when the shooting broke out.
“If anyone’s going to reject any single solution, well they’re going to hear about that from me,” Morgan stated. “And so, everything has to be on the table and we have to look at this as a comprehensive problem because it really is a comprehensive problem.”
According to One America News Network, “Pritzker’s office is looking at everything from training and education about the Firearm Restraining Order or the ‘Red Flag’ law designed to keep guns away from those deemed a danger to themselves or others.”
While Democrats are struggling to cobble together votes for gun control legislation at the federal level, Illinois legislators are working to craft state legislation to move gun control legislation forward.
“It’s a pretty simple bill. It bans military style weapons and high-capacity magazines,” declared State Representative Maura Hirschauer. “The general public in Illinois has clearly said that those types of weapons are designed for the battlefield not for hunting or any reasonable use. We are moving forward with it. I’m working it from the ground up, roll calling, gathering support and just really doing my homework on it.”
Illinois is one of the most anti-Second Amendment states in the nation. According to pro-civilian disarmament group Giffords, Illinois has an A- grade for its gun control laws. Despite having tough gun control laws on the books, the Highland Park mass shooting still took place in Illinois. Perhaps, it’s time that lawmakers realize that mass shootings of this nature go beyond the intricacies of gun policy.
After all, the contemporary US is one massive insane asylum.
