Russia Describes Finland And Sweden Joining NATO as a “Destabilizing Factor”

On June 29, 2022, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) formally invited Finland and Sweden to join the military alliance.

This move did not sit well with Russia, which described the latest NATO expansion move as “a purely destabilizing factor.”

The military alliance green lit the applications of Finland and Sweden the day after Turkey dropped some of its pain points regarding the move. Turkey’s objections centered on the alleged role Finland and Sweden played in housing Kurdish militant groups and other entities the Turkish state deems terrorist organizations

“The accession of Finland and Sweden will make them safer, NATO stronger, and the Euro-Atlantic area more secure. The security of Finland and Sweden is of direct importance to the Alliance, including during the accession process,” a NATO statement outlined.

This decision will now be kicked off to the legislative bodies of NATO member states for final approval.

Finland and Sweden’s ascensions into NATO will likely be fast-tracked due to “security” concerns that have come about after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

“I said Putin’s looking for the Finlandization of Europe. He’s going to get the NATOization of Europe. And that is exactly what he didn’t want, but exactly what needs to be done to guarantee security for Europe. And I think it’s necessary,” United States President Joe Biden declared at the summit in Madrid.

Russia’s deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov responded in a hostile manner declaring that NATO’s latest decision was a “destabilizing move.”

“We consider the expansion of the North Atlantic alliance to be a purely destabilizing factor in international affairs. It does not add security either to those who are expanding it, those joining it, or to other countries that perceive the alliance as a threat,” Ryabkov said in a quote that Interfax news agency highlighted.

Russia has been adamant about the dangers of NATO expansion directly on its borders. In a statement that he made in May about the Nordic countries’ applications, Putin declared that NATO’s expansion of military infrastructure close to Russia’s border would “certainly provoke our response.”

From here on out, we will see a Cold War 2.0 scenario taking place in Europe. Unfortunately, there are no reasonable leaders out there who will put the brakes on this misguided expansion venture.

Hopefully, right-wing populists can take power in the US and get the country out of NATO and turn over security affairs to European countries.
