Increasing Numbers of Voters Believe the Ukraine War Has Worsened the US’s National Security

According to a Rasmussen poll, more American voters are coming to the view that the Russo-Ukrainian conflict is harmful to United States interests.
In this poll, 80% of likely US voters believe national security will be an important issue in the 2022 midterms. 44% of those voters indicated that national security will be “very important.”
Only 14% believe national security will not be an important issue during the midterms.
42% believe Russia’s military incursion into Ukraine has made the US’s national security climate worse. 38% of voters believe President Joe Biden is doing a good job on national security matters, whereas 44% gave Biden poor marks on national security.
On a partisan basis, 72% of Democrats gave Biden “good” or “excellent” ratings on national security matters. However, only 14% of Republicans and 30% of independent voters share this sentiment.
By contrast, 79% of Republicans and 44% of independent voters gave Biden a poor rating on how he has handled national security affairs. Only 11% of Democrats share this sentiment.
55% of Republicans, 31% of Democrats, and 41% of independent voters believe Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has worsened America’s national security standing.
Voters making north of $200,000 are most likely to give Biden an excellent rating on the way he has handled national security affairs. By contrast, Americans making between $30,000 and $50,000 are more likely to give Biden poor marks on national security matters.
The Russo-Ukrainian conflict was very much avoidable. Had the US listened to Russia’s security concerns and stopped trying to encroach on Russia’s traditional sphere of influence, this conflict could have been avoided.
Alas, we don’t have a ruling class that can think geopolitical matters through in a sober manner. It’s going to take a new generation of foreign policy leaders who abide by the principles of realism and restraint.
