Vladimir Putin Warns that the Deployment of NATO Troops to Ukraine Could Lead to a Geopolitical Disaster

On October 14, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters that if NATO deploys troops to Ukraine to confront Russian military forces, the result will be a geopolitical disaster of colossal proportions.

BLP previously reported on the statements NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg made where he indicated that the military alliance would be willing to provide a “united response” against Russia should it decide to attack NATO members. On October 11, 2022, Stoltenberg subsequently declared that a Russian victory during the Russo-Ukrainian conflict would represent a NATO defeat.

With regards to NATO’s statement on how a Ukrainian loss would also represent a significant loss for the military alliance, Putin responded by noting that “it is a matter of perception, a matter of legal technique. Everyone can have a different understanding of that. The fact that Crimea became Russia’s constituent entity in 2014 – is it a defeat or what?”

“In any case, the deployment of any troops for a direct clash with the Russian army is a very dangerous step that could lead to a global catastrophe. I hope that those who are talking about it will have enough sense to refrain from such steps,” Putin added.

The dangers of entangling alliances cannot be stressed enough. By continuing to be a part of NATO, the United States runs the risk of sleepwalking into a geopolitical conflict with nuclear implications. Jumping into certain foreign policy squabbles between countries — Russia and Ukraine in this case — are simply not worth it.

A more sober leadership class would recognize that NATO has outlived its usefulness and the US should instead focus on its domestic and Western Hemispheric affairs.
