Secretary of State Antony Blinken is Hesitant About Adding Russia as a State Sponsor of Terrorism

On July 27, 2022, the United States Senate unanimously voted for a non-binding resolution urging Secretary of State Antony Blinken to classify Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.

Yes, that vote even included supposed “anti-war’ champions such as Kentucky Senator Rand Paul and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

However, there’s one problem with this resolution. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is opposing this push to designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.

Press TV reported that Blinken responded noncommittally to the request, saying any decision must be based on existing legal definitions.”

He stressed that the US government has already slapped Russia with massive sanctions.

“The costs that have been imposed on Russia by us and by other countries are absolutely in line with the consequences that would follow from designation as a state sponsor of terrorism,” Blinken stated. “So the practical effects of what we’re doing are the same.”

This move to label Russia a state sponsor of terrorism comes against the backdrop of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, particularly Russia’s special military operation phase that kicked off in February 24.

Since then, the Collective West has unleashed a barrage of sanctions on Russia and dumped copious amounts of military aid in Ukraine.

Earlier in the month, Russian government spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned about the “negative consequences” that could come about from labeling Russia as a state sponsor of terror.

Many pundits believe that classifying Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism could lead to the complete breakdown of diplomatic ties between Russia and US.

Only countries such as Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Syria are labeled as state sponsors of terror.

A move of this nature would be clearly escalatory in nature. US policymakers need to give up this hawkish act and recognize that its post-Cold War policy towards Russia has been immensely flawed.

Russia is not submitting to the liberal hegemonic order, and like many great powers, it has serious security interests.

An America First approach to this conflict would consist of the US leaving NATO, stopping military aid to Ukraine, and completely retrenching from Europe. The southern border and the Western Hemisphere are of far greater security importance than getting involved in Eurasian geopolitical affairs.
